This Is Niecy is the debut album of American R&B singer Deniece Williams released on August 13, 1976 by Columbia Records. The album got to Nos. 3 & 33 on the Billboard Top Soul Albums and Billboard 200 charts respectively. As well This Is Niecy has been certified Gold in the US by the RIAA and Silver in the UK by the BPI. Off the album came the single "Free" which got to Nos. 25, 2 & 1 on the Hot 100, Hot Soul Songs and UK Singles charts respectively.

Deniece Williams spent the first half of the '70s establishing herself as a background vocalist for an impressive line of artists, including Stevie Wonder, Minnie Riperton, Roberta Flack, and Esther Phillips. Though she'd continue to do session work throughout her career, she also became accomplished as a solo artist. The songs that would eventually make up her debut, This Is Niecy, were sent to Earth, Wind & Fire. Williams didn't intend to make her own album and thought these songs would be a good fit for Philip Bailey. Instead, she got to record them with most of EW&F, including Maurice White and Charles Stepney as producers, Verdine White on bass, Freddie White on drums, those glorious horns, and several other associates of the group.

June Deniece Chandler was born in Gary, Indiana in the summer of 1950, but her career as a vocalist began to build pace in the early 1970s when she started performing as a backing singer with Stevie Wonder and Minnie Riperton. Then, in 1975 Williams teamed up with Maurice White and Charles Stepney of Earth Wind and Fire fame to make her first solo album. Using tracks that had been sent to Earth Wind and Fire and featuring a number of the musicians from the group along side her, Deniece sculpted an album that featured chart-topping singles Free, Cause You Love Me Baby and That's What Friends Are For, as well as a number of solid album cuts.
