Englishman in New York" is a song by English artist Sting, from his second studio album. Nothing Like the Sun, released in October 1987. Branford Marsalis played soprano saxophone on the track, while the drums were played by Manu Katché and the percussion by Mino Cinelu. The single was released in February 1988 as the third single from the album, but only reached on the UK Singles Chart.

Englishman in New York was released as a single in 1988. The song’s main subject was Quentin Crisp, a British writer. Sting said this about the song in the liner notes for Nothing Like the Sun: I wrote Englishman in New York for a friend of mine who moved from London to New York in his early seventies to a small rented apartment in the Bowery at a time in his life when most people have settled down forever. He once told me over dinner that he looked forward to receiving his naturalization papers so that he could commit a crime and not be deported.

Lyrics to "Englishman In New York" song by Sting: I don't drink coffee I take tea my dear I like my toast done on one side And you can hear it in my . .See me walking down Fifth Avenue A walking cane here at my side I take it everywhere I walk I'm an Englishman in New York. I'm an alien, I'm a legal alien I'm an Englishman in New York I'm an alien, I'm a legal alien I'm an Englishman in New York

Englishman In New York', a song about Quentin Crisp, first appeared on the 'Nothing Like The Sun' album in 1987 and was released as a single in February 1988, where it failed to make the top 50. However, in 1990, it was remixed by Ben Liebrand and given a new lease of life when it charted and reached the spot. The song is clearly a favourite of Sting's and many fans, as testified by the roar whenever the keyboard intro starts up during a concert, and has been an ever present in his live set since 1987

I don't drink coffee I take tea my dear I like my toast done on one side And you can hear it in my accent when I talk I'm an Englishman in New York. I'm an alien I'm a legal alien I'm an Englishman in New York I'm an alien I'm a legal alien I'm an Englishman in New York

His 1987 classic Englishman in New York may have spoken about the loneliness and anonymity that comes with being solo in the Big Apple, but Sting has been thoroughly enjoying the experience of late. He explains that many New Yorkers had no idea the person who just walked past them was a rock icon; thanks to the big, healthy beard he has been sporting for more than a year. I decided to keep it because no one immediately recognises me when I stroll down the street. Although The Last Ship, which morphed from album to concert tour to Broadway show, was not a box-office success, it was nominated for two gongs at the Tony awards on Sunday night – Best Original Score (Sting) and Best Orchestrations (Rob Mathes). It also was a highly personal story for Sting. It is very personal to me and it was a story that I was compelled to tell, he says.
