Along Comes the Association is the debut studio album by the American sunshine pop band the Association, and was released on Valiant Records, in July 1966 (see 1966 in music). It became one of the top selling LPs in America, peaking at number five, and remains the Association's most successful album release, with the exception of their Greatest Hits compilation.

Along Comes Mary Lyrics. Every time I think that I'm the only one who's lonely Someone calls on me And every now and then I spend my time in rhyme and verse And curse those faults in me. And then along comes Mary And does she want to give me kicks And be my steady chick and give me pick of memories Or maybe rather gather tales From all the fails and tribulations no one ever sees When we met I was sure out to lunch Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch. When vague desire is the fire in the eyes of chicks Whose sickness is the games they play And.

Breaking in with the pot-coded ode "Along Comes Mary," the Association had a long and troubled association with drugs a lot harder than Mary Jane. Bass player Brian Cole overdosed on heroin in 1972. In the '60s drugs were everywhere," Bones said. That final section is introduced by a two page blurb that begins with: "Turning on has replaced love as the major repository for code in rock. Like sex, drugs are usually forbidden, but often fun. Singing about drugs is a good way to get banned on the radio.

The Association's debut single, "Along Comes Mary" managed to go Top Ten in the spring of 1966 despite the controversy about the lyrics having drug connotations. At the time, many radio station programmers were under the spell of the Gavin Report, a radio tip sheet, not unlike Billboard. According to Gavin, the "Mary" referred to in the title was a reference to "mary jane," slang for marijuana. It was all nonsense, of course. The song itself is filled with some clever, densely packed wordplay, and underneath that, it's a simple song about falling in love. An interesting pop/folkish melody with some unusual time signatures is the musical base here. The song's composer, Tandyn Almar, later went on to co-write "Sail on Sailor.

Along Comes Mary would be rewarded with a No. 7 chart placement, and The Association began work on a full-length LP. With the exception of Brian Cole, all of the group members were represented as songwriters on their debut LP. In addition to Almer, there were a couple other songs penned by outside writers. On the strength of both the shimmering Cherish and the edgier Along Comes Mary, And The. long Comes The Association hit No. 5 on the album chart, the group’s peak studio album placement. While ever-popular creative differences led to a parting of the ways with Boettcher (who went on to produce Sagittarius among many other accomplishments), the good times had just begun for The Association. Your Own Love (Instrumental). Better Times (Instrumental). I’ll Be Your Man (Where Were You) (Instrumental).
