The Big To-Do further brought media attention to the band, resulting in their highest chart success, appearances on David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon's late night shows, and a scheduled tour opening for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. During a performance on the Late Show with David Letterman in June 2011, the band played a cover of Eddie Hinton's song "Everybody. Drive-By Truckers backed up Booker T. Jones on his instrumental album Potato Hole, which was released on April 21, 2009. Neil Young also contributed over-dubbed guitar work to the album; the Drive-By Truckers and he never met in studio. Potato Hole features a re-recording of the Cooley penned track "Space City", which originally was released on the album A Blessing And A Curse. The band performed with Jones as "Booker T and the DBTs" at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival on June 14, 2009.

Hood and Mike Cooley continue to be the chief songwriters of the group, continuing a musical partnership that has lasted over twentythree years

All lyrics from The Big To-Do album, popular Drive-By Truckers songs with tracklist and information about album. Album The Big To-Do (2010). by Drive-By Truckers. Drive-By Truckers "The Big To-Do" (2010) album.

Formed in Athens, Georgia in 1996, Drive-By Truckers have spent the last 14 years introducing the ramshackle, distorted aesthetic of 90s grunge to a vintage Southern rock template. Like a cross between Pearl Jam and Creedence, the band have consistently avoided sinking into the anonymous jam-band swamp with tight songcraft and appealingly lurid storytelling, passionately delivered by principal songwriters Patterson Hood, Shonna Tucker and Mike Cooley. The first four tracks of new album The Big To-Do are a solid continuation of the Truckers’ recent winning streak. Opener Daddy Learned to Fly kicks the album off with a thick riff and a sparkling, Springsteen-worthy chorus.

The Big To-Do Art This album is the seventh one in a row that has featured artwork by our dear friend Wes Freed. He and his wife Jyl live in Richmond, VA and have been a part of our family for nearly as long as we’ve had this band. We never tell him what to draw and often give him no input at all, yet he always seems to find some subtext, often one we didn’t know was there, that he brings out and runs with. I think that the relationship has hit a new level on this album, as he basically illustrated every song  . Recording The Big To-Do This album marks the seventh album we’ve made with David Barbe. He mixed Alabama Ass Whuppin’ and co-produced Southern Rock Opera also, but didn’t start from the ground up on one until Decoration Day). It’s a partnership that rivals any within the band itself.

With the release of The Big To-Do, it is difficult to envision the fortunes of the Drive-By Truckers considerably changing. Their new label is more established, the album is leaner and more concise than previous efforts, and the emphasis is higher on rock and lower on country, all ingredients that could theoretically lead to heightened mainstream acknowledgment. Perhaps in an effort to align themselves with a brighter limelight, The Truckers are stripped down here, forgoing the grandiose, quasi epic reaches of the past in favor of more traditional rock proclivities. With another album slated for late 2010, perhaps The Big To-Do can be labeled as a slight misstep for the Truckers. For a band that has consistently delivered at an impressive and prolific rate, the weight of expectations is heightened, and perhaps a slightly above average showing can be viewed as worse than it actually is.
