You’re the Man reveals Marvin Gaye as a multidimensional, complicated human being who deserves our respect, but not necessarily our unchecked worship-no more so than the political figures he so rightly critiques. In 2019, movements like have taught us that we can strive to be ‘leaderful ’ in embracing collective models of governance rather than pin our hopes and futures on any one single charismatic individual
Marvin Gaye’s 1972 lost album, You’re the Man, will finally be released March 29th, just days before what would’ve been the musician’s 80th birthday, April 2nd. You’re the Man was supposed to be the follow-up to Gaye’s 1971 classic, What’s Going On. Gaye recorded the tracks for the would-be record in Detroit and Los Angeles during a particularly prolific period, but none of them – save the titular single – were released at the time. Accompanying the You’re the Man announcement is a mesmerizing new mix of My Last Chance from producer Salaam Remi (Nas, Amy Winehouse). Gaye originally recorded.
He reworked You’re the Man in the hazy, shimmering style of that album, and recorded Woman of the World – an ostensibly breezy ode to feminism that on closer inspection seems to be grousing that women’s lib is interfering with the more important business of Marvin Gaye getting his leg over.
You’re the Man’s title track, a scathing denunciation of Richard Nixon that may be the most explicitly political composition of Gaye’s career, is probably the album’s best-known song and was intended as its lead single.
Upon its release in 2019, You're the Man was billed as a "lost" album - an album intended to appear between Marvin Gaye's 1971 masterwork What's Going On and 1973's Let's Get It On. The story isn't quite so simple

In the notes, Ritz attempts to examine Gaye’s deeply personal internal conflict as a source of creative vigor and emotional burden as he experienced What’s Going On‘s massive success and all that came with it. In addition to this long lost gem, Motown will also digitally release an expanded version of Gaye’s 1965 album, A Tribute to the Great Nat King Cole, on March 15th.
