Sergei Rachmaninoff composed his Piano Concerto No. 1 in F♯ minor, Op. 1, in 1891, at age 18. He dedicated the work to Alexander Siloti. He revised the work thoroughly in 1917. The work is in three movements: Vivace (F♯ minor). This contrast with the later works can be heard from the opening bars, where a brass fanfare precedes a flourish of double octaves and chords on the piano - a musical gesture similar to the Schumann and Grieg piano concertos.

Long Out Of Print 180gm HQ Shaded Dog Version. Byron Janis, Fritz Reiner, Chicago Symphony Orchestra. This is very rare record, so I couldn't find any valuable information about it. Track Listing: 1. Franz Liszt - Totentanz 2. Sergei Rachmaninoff - Piano Concerto No. 1 - First Movement - Vivace 3. 1 - Second Movement - Andante cantabile 4. 1 - Third Movement - Allegro vivace.

Byron Janis contributes a spirited and performance of the Strauss "Burleske for Piano and Orchestra. The CD finishes with Reiner's masterly arrangement of Strauss' Waltzes from "Der Rosenkavalier. Sound on this CD is excellent in the typical RCA Living Stereo manner. I would include his Pictures At An Exhibition and Bartok Concerto For Orchestra in that assessment as well - they were extremely important recordings in their time, but have been replaced by other readings that are more vital, and better recorded).
