Ian Stephen McCulloch (born 5 May 1959) is an English singer-songwriter and musician, best known as the frontman of the rock group Echo & the Bunnymen. McCulloch was a singer-songwriter with the Crucial Three, one of many local bands that sprung up amongst the regulars who patronised a Liverpool club called Eric's in the late '70s. The other two members were Julian Cope and Pete Wylie who went on to form Wah!. The band existed between May and June 1977, and never got beyond rehearsals.
In between the 1988 demise and resurrection of Echo & the Bunnymen in 1997, frontman Ian McCulloch made an earnest attempt at a solo career. Candleland was a somber effort rooted in classic Bunnymen design, whereas Mysterio went for an over-styled synth-driven sound. When it came time to get back to his own work, McCulloch didn't go for a grandiose production. He turned 40, released two guitar-oriented Bunnymen albums by the time the new millennium was underway, and obviously felt good about where he stood as an artist.

Ian McCulloch: Slideling. Despite the absence of guitarist Will Sergeant and the presence of Coldplay's Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland, Ian McCulloch's third solo album doesn't differ enormously from his recent output with Echo and the Bunnymen. However, get past the big choruses and Slideling contains some of the most personal, confessional songs of his career. These are anthems born of lonely nights in hotel rooms, crises in confidence and pleas for emotional rescue; in them, the vulnerable character beneath the notorious Mac bravado is exposed.
