The well-known Estamos Juntos, a definitive landmark in Waldemar Bastos’ career, includes the theme A Velha Chica ( Xê, little boy, don’t talk politics ), and had, among others, Chico Buarque, João do Vale, Dorival Caimmy, Martinho da Villa and Novelli as special guests. In 1985, he settled in Lisbon, recording his second album Angola Minha Namorada in 1990 and Pitanga Madura in 1992. Waldemar dos Santos Alonso de Almeida Bastos (born January 4, 1954, São Salvador do Congo, Portuguese Angola) is an Angolan musician who combines Afropop, Portuguese (fado), and Brazilian influences. He was born in the Portuguese Overseas Province of Angola's town of São Salvador do Congo (now M'banza-Kongo) from black parents who were both nurses. He started singing at a very early age using his father's instruments.

Enja Records is a German jazz record company and label based in Munich which was founded by jazz enthusiasts Matthias Winckelmann and Horst Weber in 1971. The label's first release was by Mal Waldron, and early releases included European and Japanese avant-garde artists such as Alexander von Schlippenbach, Terumasa Hino, Albert Mangelsdorff and Yosuke Yamashita, along with newer American jazz musicians.

In 1982, Bastos defected from Angola and lived temporarily in Brazil, where he recorded his debut album, Estamos Juntos. Following a short period in Paris, he relocated to Portugal, where he continues to reside. Bastos' second album, Angola Minha Namorada ("My Sweetheart Angola"), released in 1990, was followed by Pitanga Madura ("Ripe Berry") two years later. The title tune became a major hit in Angola. In 1998, Bastos released his first internationally distributed album, Pretaluz'.
