The works are based loosely on characters from the Norse sagas and the Nibelungenlied. The composer termed the cycle a "Bühnenfestspiel" (stage festival play), structured in three days preceded by a Vorabend ("preliminary evening"). It is often referred to as the Ring Cycle, Wagner's Ring, or simply The Ring.

The four operas of Richard Wagner's cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen together take about 15 hours, which makes for several records, tapes, or CDs, and a lot of studio time. For this reason, many full Ring recordings are the result of "unofficial" recording of live performances, particularly from the Bayreuth Festival where new productions are often broadcast by German radio.

Der Ring des Nibelungen. Stage festival play in three days preceded by a Vorabend (preliminary evening) by Richard Wagner Libretto by the composer. The first performance as a cycle opened the first Bayreuth Festival in 1876. Reprise of the production by Dieter Dorn & Jürgen Rose (2012-13 & 2013-14). Sung in German with English and French surtitles. Vorabend in 4 scenes of Der Ring des Nibelungen by Richard Wagner. First day in 3 acts of Der Ring des Nibelungen by Richard Wagner.

Der Ring des Nibelungen, or the Ring cycle, is an unsurpassed exaltation of German heritage and mythology. In places, Wagner tells the story with the orchestra, using of melody that convey emotions and themes as they recur in varying contexts. It is even possible for the orchestra to convey ideas that are hidden from the characters themselves-an idea that later found its way into film scores. Wagner was perpetually in need of funds, and the Ring would be extremely expensive to stage.
