Vladimir Samoylovich Horowitz (/ˈhɒrəvɪts/; Russian: Владимир Самойлович Горовиц; Ukrainian: Володимир Самійлович Горовиць; Yiddish: וולאדימיר סאַמוילאָוויטש האָראָוויץ‎; October 1 1903 – November 5, 1989) was an American classical pianist and composer born in the Russian Empire. He was acclaimed for his virtuoso technique, his tone color, and the excitement engendered by his playing. He is recognized as one of the greatest pianists of all time.

North German Radio recorded Horowitz's June 21, 1987, recital in Hamburg's Musikhalle, but the recording remained nearly untouched until Deutsche Grammophon released it in 2008. For dedicated Horowitz fans, this will be all they need to know. Eighty three years old and increasingly frail, this Horowitz is not the thundering virtuoso of earlier years. Altogether gone is the heaven-storming pianist of his youth, but still present is the supreme artist of his maturity.

You are here: Home HOROWITZ IN HAMBURG: THE LAST CONCERT. Horowitz in hamburg: the last concert. The Schubert/Liszt Valse-Caprice splits the difference between Horowitz’s solid, ever-so-slightly cautious studio version and the more volatile performance from the historic 1986 Moscow concert. His own conclusion, of course, delights as much as his revamped ending to Moszkowski’s Etincelles. Although Horowitz always garnished Schumann’s Kinderszenen with affetuoso gestures, the Hamburg reading is far superior to the overly mannered caricature from five years earlier, preserved on Horowitz in London (RCA).

Exclusive Prime pricing. But I wanted to correct a few errors which have been circulated in regard to this recording. First, the corrections used on the original version of "Horowitz at Carnegie Hall" were not made at a "patch session at Carnegie a few days" after the concert.
