He was born in Paris, the son of a French Army general. His mother taught him to play the piano, but he had a mild case of polio as a child and lost dexterity in his feet and legs. Having difficulties with the piano pedals, he turned to the cello.

His parents taught him before he began studying cello at age 7. At 9 he was accepted at the Toulouse Conservatory, and graduated in 1924 with 1st prize when 13. He continued his studies at the Conservatoire de Paris and graduated 2 years later, again taking 1st prize. He stopped lessons but worked out his own course of study like transcribing many of the violin technical methods to fill the lack of decent cello études. Cellist and composer Paul Tortelier (1914-1990) entered the Paris Conservatoire when 12 and studied the cello there. He won the 1st prize in cello at the conservatoire when 16, playing the Elgar cello concerto. He debuted with the Orchestre Lamoureux in 1931 at 17 performing Lalo's Cello Concerto. In 1935 he joined the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic as first cellist until 1937. He gave performances under Walter and Toscanini, and also played the solo part in Strauss' Don Quixote under the.
