Franz Konwitschny (August 14, 1901, Fulnek, Moravia – July 28, 1962, Belgrade) was a German conductor and violist of Moravian descent. The role of the Dutchman is sung by legendary lyric baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, described by The Guardian as ‘the most influential singer of the 20th century’. Playing his love interest, Senta, is Marianne Schech, while Gottlob Frick takes the role of her father. The soloists are supported by the Chor der deutschen Staatsoper Berlin and the Staatskapelle Berlin, conducted by Franz Konwitschny. A star cast with a glorious Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, the heldentenor Rudolf Schock, Sieglinde Wagner, Gottlob Frick and the incomparable Fritz Wunderlich.

Konwitschny/German State Opera for me. I'm not familiar with this recording! Do elaborate on its merits! . Schech is alright as Senta and Schock is a more than adequate Erik. The orchestra is the old DDR Berlin Staatskapelle who, then as now, are a force to be reckoned with with the excellent Franz Konwitschny at the helm. here is the line-up: The Dutchman baritone/ Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Daland bass/Gottlob Frick, Senta, soprano /Marianne Schech, Erik tenor/Rudolf Shock, The Steersman tenor/Fritz Wunderlich, Mary contralto/Sieglinde Wagner. I enjoy the EMI sound and the spirit of the performance. com/watch?v toKpupTzGUM.
