Matapédia is the seventh album by Kate & Anna McGarrigle, released in 1996. Kate's daughter Martha Wainwright appears on the album as a backing vocalist; she is also directly mentioned in the lyrics of the title track. The title "Matapédia" refers to the river in eastern Quebec which runs down to the town of Matapédia and then out into baie des Chaleurs. The rhythm of the river is supposed to be the inspiration for the loping beat of the album's title track.

Occasionally, they augment their songs with worldbeat flourishes, but mainly the album sticks to folky introspection. While their skills have diminished slightly since their stellar debut, they remain evocative, challenging, fresh, and inspirational.
Matapedia (Remastered 2012). Hard to believe it's been 20 years since the first McGarrigle album. Maybe it's because they've always floated so much on the fringe of things-not quite folk, not quite country, not quite fitting into any pigeonhole beyond lovely songwriting, harmonies, and singing.
