The Stones in the Park was a free outdoor festival held in Hyde Park on 5 July 1969, headlined by The Rolling Stones and featuring Third Ear Band, King Crimson, Screw, Alexis Korner's New Church, Family and The Battered Ornaments, in front of a crowd estimated at between 250,000 and 500,000 fans.
The Rolling Stones will return this summer to Hyde Park – an echo of the groundbreaking day 44 years ago when the British underground scene came into its own. What do those who were there remember? Ed Vulliamy, Peter Beaumont and Tess Reidy. King Crimson nearly stole the show, playing songs from their forthcoming landmark album In the Court of the Crimson King. It was a lovely sunny day, and it launched us," the band's manager, David Enthoven, remembers. We overran, and there was a lot of waving at me by the Stones' stage manager. But we had to finish, and we did, with me crouching under the stage sounding an air-raid siren

The Rolling Stones’ 1969 Hyde Park concert in 1969 has become the stuff of legend: a gig that helped define the band during a moment of crisis. Published on. July 5, 2017. Cutler used it to introduce them throughout their US tour later in the year and it can be heard on Get Your Ya Yas Out, their live album recorded on the tour. On Ya Yas they very definitely lived up to their billing, but at Hyde Park it was a very different story. Rather than a rock ‘n’ roll band they were as much the blues band that they all wanted to be, when they formed in 1962. As one music paper said in their issue that came out a week later, 99% of the audience came to listen and not (as they might have done five years ago) to scream.
