Many of these performances are longer than usual because Edison put out quite a few 12" (as opposed to 10") 78s; eight of the performances are over four minutes in length. Nichols is heard on two songs with the Charleston Seven in 1924, on a pair of selections with the California Ramblers (under the name of the Golden Gate Orchestra), on three versions of "Pardon the Glove" with Don Voorhees' Orchestra and featured during four songs (plus seven alternates!) with Red & Miff's Stompers, a septet that includes trombonist Miff Mole and. Jimmy Dorsey.

Red Nichols on Edison" is a wonderful disc that's sure to please every lover of the 1920's sound. Edison recordings were typically somewhat longer than other labels, frequently . to . minutes, which allowed bands to really jam out, and Nichols never fails to please. 9 people found this helpful. It's interesting that Nichols' Edison records included covers of songs originally recorded by Black bands (Fletcher Henderson's "Stampede" and Jelly Roll Morton's "Black Bottom Stomp"), but though these are good performances they lack the vitality of the Black originals

Ernest Loring "Red" Nichols (May 8, 1905 – June 28, 1965) was an American jazz cornettist, composer, and jazz bandleader. Over his long career, Nichols recorded in a wide variety of musical styles, and critic Steve Leggett describes him as "an expert cornet player, a solid improviser, and apparently a workaholic, since he is rumored to have appeared on over 4,000 recordings during the 1920s alone.
