This is the discography of Blue Note Records, the American jazz record label. Most of the records were studio recordings produced by Alfred Lion or Francis Wolff. The two main series were '1500', which ran from 1955 to 1958, and '4000', which ran . 958 to 1972. The 'BN-LA' series followed during the 1970s: this series contained many compilations and reissues in addition to new studio albums.
John Coltrane – Blue Train (1958). For being such a scion of jazz, it seems a little weird that this is ‘Trane’s only Blue Note album guided by his own hand from start to finish. Yet in honoring a verbal agreement with label founder Alfred Lion he ended up doing the right thing for Blue Note’s reputation, for his own legacy, and for jazz history. Somethin’ else, indeed: Despite the alto sax man’s name at the top of the marquee this is a Miles Davis album by proxy, which is kind of a miracle since not only is this is one of the last albums to list Davis as a sideman, but it’s part of a surprising short history he had with Blue Note. Adderley was a sidekick on either side of this release-part of Miles’ sextet formed in 1957, and heard on his stone classic Columbia album Kind of Blue in 1959-and it sometimes even feels as such on this album, where Davis’ solos and duets are prominent and early.
Blue note records: beyond the notes set for theatrical openings in NY (6/14) & la (6/28). Critically acclaimed musician and songwriter Jamie Cullum is back with his brand new album Taller, which will be released June 7 via Blue Note Records in the . and Island Records elsewhere. Ron carter and danny simmons to release The brown beatnik tomes – live at BRIC house on june 7.
In jazz and blues, a blue note is a note that-for expressive purposes-is sung or played at a slightly different pitch than standard. Typically the alteration is between a quartertone and a semitone, but this varies depending on the musical context.
Blue Note is an iconic jazz label, so it only makes sense to put together a list of the greatest Blue Note albums. Find out what’s on our list here. Clifford Brown – Memorial Album 19. Joe Henderson – Mode For Joe 18. Ornette Coleman – At The Golden Circle Stockholm 17. McCoy Tyner The Real McCoy 16. Kenny Burrell – Midnight Blue. 15. Thelonious Monk – Genius of Modern Music vo. & 2. 14. Bud Powell – The Amazing Bud Powell V.
This is the only album that Coltrane made for Blue Note as leader. By general acclaim, however, it is rated as the best of his early recordings, and among the finest of his career. 4 Art Blakey: Moanin’ (1958). The drummer Art Blakey was one of Blue Note’s staple figures. Selecting one from the stack of albums Blakey made for Blue Note with his Jazz Messengers is tricky. This album has a hit in the title track by Bobby Timmons. 5 Hank Mobley: Workout (1961). Tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley was a musician’s musician, underrated during his life, a cult after his death. Long, tall Dexter was one of Blue Note’s most notable rediscoveries. After he had spent much of the Fifties in jail for narcotics offences, his splendid series of Blue Notes relaunched his career. This was his own favourite. 7 Lee Morgan: The Sidewinder (1963).
