The Wind Ensemble is the University of Houston's premiere performing organization. The ensemble has gained a national reputation through performances at the conventions of the Texas Music Educators Association (1988, 1993, 1997, and 2002, and 2006), College Band Directors National Association, the Meyerson Symphony Hall Series in Dallas, and numerous performances in the Houston metropolitan area.
A concert band, also called wind ensemble, symphonic band, wind symphony, wind orchestra, wind band, symphonic winds, symphony band, or symphonic wind ensemble, is a performing ensemble consisting of members of the woodwind, brass, and percussion families of instruments, and occasionally including the double bass or bass guitar.

Wind ensembles (also known as 'concert bands', 'symphonic bands', 'wind orchestras', etc) are performing groups consisting mainly of woodwinds and/or brass instruments. Commonly associated with communal institutions -or the military- concert bands perform repertoires including original music, transcriptions of popular tunes, and light pieces. Marching bands feature a similar instrumentation, though they differ in that their purpose is to play music while marching, instead of functioning as a concert ensemble. Wind Ensemble's top 10 list.
Renamed the Symphonic Wind Ensemble in 1969, the group began developing a reputation for innovation and artistic performance, honoring and expressing the orchestral training and tradition of Northwestern’s applied faculty. Under the direction of Mallory Thompson, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble has participated in dozens of commissioning consortia and presented numerous world premieres, winning acclaim from composers John Adams, Michael Colgrass, John Corigliano, Karel Husa, Morten Lauridsen, David Maslanka, Jonathan Newman, Carter Pann, Joel Puckett, Joseph Schwantner, and Augusta Read Thomas
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble participates in the annual Department of Music Concerto Competition, offering students the opportunity to perform a solo concerto with the ensemble. In addition, the ensemble hosts the University of Alberta High School Honour Band each spring, inviting students from across the province to come to campus to work and perform with members of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble as well as our applied instrumental faculty. Alumni of SWE have gone on to positions with major orchestras, military bands – even the world-famous Canadian Brass! Symphonic Wind Ensemble.
