There is a time for the evening under starlight, A time for the evening under lamplight (The evening with the photograph album). Love is most nearly itself When here and now cease to matter. Old men ought to be explorers Here or there does not matter We must be still and still moving Into another intensity For a further union, a deeper communion Through the dark cold and the empty desolation, The wave cry, the wind cry, the vast waters Of the petrel and the porpoise.
Four Quartets: East Coker. Four Quartets: East Coker Lyrics. The second of Eliot’s Four Quartets, East Coker was published in 1940, four years after the original publication of Burnt Norton. The title refers to a small parish in Somerset connected to Eliot’s ancestry and whose church would later become the final resting place of Eliot’s ashes. It was while writing East Coker that Eliot thought of creating a quartet of poems that would reflect the idea of the four elements.
