The Road Home is a live album released in 1995, the fourteenth album overall by the rock group Heart. It chronicles a club performance in the "unplugged" style, but with strings, given in their home city of Seattle. It was produced by John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, and contains acoustic versions of many of the band's hits including "Alone", "Barracuda", and "Dreamboat Annie". The album reached number eighty-seven on the .
One for the Road isn’t anything like The Live Kinks, a 1968 LP that had the blood-sloppy grandeur of an lggy Pop bootleg and was accurately pegged by critic Nik Cohn as amphetamine rage. It’s not like 1972’s Everybody’s in Showbiz either. Happily, the new album’s bywords are control and momentum. One for the Road doesn’t catalog Davies’ psychic maladies (though National Health pivots on the starkly downbeat lines. Valium helps me for a while But somehow Valium always seems to bring me down ). Instead, it’s a shake-yer-booty record whose connective tissue is Mick Avory’s earnest, rock-steady drumming. Kinks concerts, once the chanciest of propositions, now have the friskiness and precision of One for the Road as a model with which to be compared. Perhaps the single biggest factor in the resurgence of the Kinks as a hot live act has been Dave Davies.
Album AM. One for the Road Lyrics. One for the road, oooh oooh One for the road, oooh oooh. From the bottom of your heart The relegation zone I saw this comin' from the start The shake, rattle and roll The cracks in blackout blinds Cast patterns on the ceiling But you're feeling fine I thought it was dark outside I thought it was dark outside. One for the road So we all get back to yours And you sit and talk to me on the floor There's no need to show me 'round, baby I feel like I've been here before I've been wonderin' whether later When you tell everybody to go Will you pour me one for the road? I knew this would be on the cards I knew you wouldn't fold I saw this comin' from the start The shake, rattle and roll.
On The Road Home, Heart re-records some of their biggest hits acoustically live in concert. It's interesting to hear these arena rock and AOR standards - including "Barracuda," "Crazy on You," "Dreamboat Annie," and "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You" - recast as intimate numbers; Heart manages to find new layers in all of these warhorses, partially due to the sublime production of John Paul Jones. The result is Heart's best album in years - the old material sounds more alive than anything they have written in a decade.
