Tullio Serafin (1 September 1878 – 2 February 1968) was an Italian conductor. Tullio Serafin was a leading Italian opera conductor with a long career and a very broad repertoire who revived many 19th-century bel canto operas by Bellini, Rossini and Donizetti to become staples of 20th-century repertoire. He had an unparalleled reputation as a coach of young opera singers and famously harnessed and developed Maria Callas's considerable talents.

Maria Callas (soprano). Philharmonia Orchestra, Tullio Serafin. The Callas wobble appears in these 1954 recitals; in Butterfly her voice is clearly ill-suited to the role, and her Liù and Mimi are inclined to sound stagey and shrill. BBC Music Magazine, July 2008, Mor. elease Date: 31st Dec 2007. Her September 1954 Watford Town Hall sessions featured on this recording were released on two albums, one devoted to Puccini arias, not without blemishes, and the second featuring a selection entitled Coloratura Lyric Arias, which remains justly famous to this day. In the two arias from Cilea’a Adriana Lecouvreur, Callus’ interpretation benefits from her remarkably expansive breath span.

This extraordinary album of Puccini arias was aptly named Puccini Heroines, as it is indeed a collection of portraits of many of the composer’s powerful creations for soprano. By September 1954, Callas had reinvented herself as a slim, elegant diva; the weight loss brought a new slenderness to the voice as well, while the instrument retained flexibility and plushness. Listening to this disc 60 years on, one is struck immediately by the sheer beauty in much of the singing.
