Pianist Georg Graewe, double-bassist Damon Smith, and drummer Michael Vatcher met for the first time at Oktaven Audio studios in Mt. Unhesitating indeed! In its eight or so hours in the studio, this trio not only recorded lots of fine material; it also established a trio sound very different from the previous trio with double-bassist Marcio Mattos (Subsymbolism and Impressions of Monk). This disc features cover photography by the late László Moholy-Nagy and fine liner notes from jazz journalist Bill Shoemaker, who also wrote the notes for Subsymbolism.
Impressions of Monk finds pianist Georg Graewe leading the way through unique interpretations and arrangements of Thelonious Monk compositions. Joining Graewe are Marcio Mattos on bass and Michael Vatcher on drums and zither. The album opens with Graewe's solo reworking of "Brilliant Corners" then jumps right into a trio take on "I Mean You," surprisingly more faithful, in sections, to the original than would be expected (Vatcher even rides the cymbal).

Pianist Georg Graewe is clearly the leader on this date of nine improvisations that skirt the jazz edge and, at times, engage it thoroughly. There is a programmatic cohesiveness to this project that sets it apart from many free improv dates
