Phil Cordell (17 July 1947 – 31 March 2007) was a British musician who released a number of records in the late 1960s and 1970s under several stage names, most notably as Springwater in the UK and Dan the Banjo Man in Germany. He was a t and usually played all the instruments on his musical recordings. After leaving school in 1963, Phil Cordell joined North London band Steve Douglas and the Challengers as a guitarist.
In fact, Dan the Banjo Man was a Phil Cordell solo project, from the t who had sprung into the . s Top Five under the alias Springwater with his "I Will Return" single in 1971. However, Cordell decided that his new wah-wah guitar sounded like a banjo, and thus the Banjo Man was born. The self-recorded and self-produced set was a true bedroom project, recorded on four-track in the cellar of Cordell's Sussex home

Dan The Banjo Man is the self-produced album by British musician Phil Cordell, recorded under the pseudonym "Dan The Banjo Man". It was first released in Germany by Rare Earth Records in 1974. The title track became one of Cordell's best known recordings. Previously, Cordell had recorded the instrumental "I Will Return", under the pseudonym "Springwater". It became a hit in the UK in 1971. He also released some singles under his real name in 1973, including "Close To You".
