The young Rhode Island doom revivalists Pilgrim's second album is more relentless and loaded than its predecessor, even though the duo often forgoes an additional layer of vocals. But their abiding sense of doom remains intact, and they now seem capable of writing around the records from which they learned. The young Rhode Island doom revivalists Pilgrim spent the first four minutes of their 2012 debut building a sort of altar for the voice of the Wizard, their vibrato-emboldened frontman

II: Void Worship keeps the basics of the sound, but reduces the dependence on drone and tries for a more diverse and melodic approach. There are fewer mega-long dirge marathons and the writing is much more energetic and diverse, sometimes approximating the works of Argus and Grand Magus. The album has a lot of junk in the truck, winding down with ginormous, overlong monoliths like the title track and Away From Here. Where the former borrows bleak and bombastic riffs from the early Saint Vitus category for a morose, but over-extended voyage down despair street, the latter brings back a bit more post-metal/shoegaze and more emotionally damaged vocals.

But on their second album, II: Void Worship, the band seems to have fallen victim to the dreaded sophomore slump. Void Worship, in stark contrast to Misery Wizard, is an inconsistent and weakened blend of mediocre doom. There’s moments of brilliance here, like on the opening riffs of Master’s Chamber and the title track, but the band seems to lose direction halfway through the songs as they start treading water with the same old riffs at the same languid pace. The Wizard’s soaring baritone has always been a major highlight of Pilgrim’s sound, so its omission will leave the listener wanting.

Pilgrim: II: Void Worship (Metal Blade) CD/LP/DL Out Now 6/10. Hailing from Rhode Island, USA, Pilgrim have unleashed their second long player. Void Worship is the follow up to 2012’s Misery Wizard. Can the American doom duo strike again? Hailing from Rhode Island, USA, Pilgrim have unleashed their second long player. A short intro opens the album before the long and trudging Master’s Chamber. In The Presence Of Evil opens with a very long intro with much of the décor already on show in the previous half of the album. Like the previous track, it’s an instrumental. The guitars are dense and sprawling again. It gives way to the album’s title track which is certainly a highlight of the album. Void Worship has some fantastic drum work and a haunting guitar line that is complimented well by the mournful vocals.
