Francis Jean Marcel Poulenc (French: ; 7 January 1899 – 30 January 1963) was a French composer and pianist. His compositions include mélodies, solo piano works, chamber music, choral pieces, operas, ballets, and orchestral concert music

Litanies à la Vierge noire (Litany to the Black Virgin), FP 82, is sacred music composed by Francis Poulenc in 1936 for a three-part choir of women (or children) and organ, setting a French litany recited at the pilgrimage site Rocamadour which the composer visited. The subtitle, Notre-Dame de Rocamadour, refers to the venerated black sculpture of Mary. The composition is Poulenc's first piece of sacred music. In 1947 he wrote a version for voices accompanied by string orchestra and timpani.

With Jacques Février he then plays the Concerto for two pianos in 1962 for television, accompanied by the Orchestre National de la RTF conducted by the young Georges Prêtre, Poulenc’s favourite conductor at this time. We then see a recital given for French TV by Jacques Février and Gabriel Bacquier in 1964, in homage to the composer who died one year before. They perform three excerpts from his melodies : the Offrande and Invocation aux parques (Chansons gaillardes), Voyage à Paris and Hôtel (Banalités), Les gars qui vont à la fête (Chansons villageoises)

Georges Prêtre conducts Poulenc. Maurice Duruflé, Gabriel Tacchino, Aimée Van der Weile, Francis Poulenc & Jacques Fevrier. This set usefully collects Poulenc's concertante works and throws in Les biches and the Litanies à la Vierge noire for good measure. BBC Music Magazine, November 2009, More.
