El Encuentro - A film for bandoneon and violoncello by Norbert Wiedmer and Enrique Ros.
Dino Saluzzi’s first live album for ECM finds the Argentinean bandoneon master at Amsterdam’s Muziekgebouw, presenting new orchestral compositions. Dino himself is principal soloist throughout the recording, joined by Anja Lechner and brother Felix Saluzzi at points along the way. The flowing music, with strings shadowing the movement of the bandoneon, extends the spirit of Dino’s storytelling solo works such as Andina (to which the piece Plegaria Andina makes reference).
This album was released on the label ECM Records (catalog number ECM 5051) ECM Records (catalog number DVD 5051) ECM Records (catalog number 076 2841) ECM Records (catalog number DVD 076 2841). In Sounds and Silence, Norbert Wiedmer produced a rather fleeting portrait of ECM Records and its head Manfred Eicher, leaving viewers with, at best, vague sketches by trying to do too much in one go. But with El Encuentro, glimpses of which one might remember seeing in the former documentary, he has given us the film that should have been. Along with co-director Enrique Ros, Wiedmer touches more of the label’s ethos by following only two of its major artists than Sounds and Silence does in profiling many more besides.
At home with both improvisation and the classical tradition, Lechner is, with Dino Saluzzi, the subject of the documentary film El Encuentro made by Norbert Wiedmer & Enrique Ros and recently issued by ECM on DVD. French pianist François Couturier is the founder-composer of the Tarkovsky Quartet, of which Anja Lechner is a member, and also plays in duo with the cellist (ECM recording in preparaion). Couturier’s other ECM albums include a solo recording Un jour si blanc, and a duo disc with violinist Dominique Pifarély, as well as recordings with Tunisian oud master Anouar Brahem.
Anja Lechner and Dino have toured widely as a duo, too and US jazz magazine "Down Beat" declares the album that recorded together, Ojos Negros album of the year (best of 2007 list). Dino Saluzzi symphonic works were presented with Anja Lechner and Metropole Orkest at Muziekgebouw, Amsterdam in February, 2009. Soloist: Dino Saluzzi - bandoneon; Guest: Anja Lechner - cello; Conductor: Jules Buckley. Dino Saluzzi by Gert Chesi.
