The following is the discography of Deep Purple, an English rock band. Formed in 1968 by Jon Lord, Ian Paice, Rod Evans, Ritchie Blackmore, and Nick Simper, Deep Purple released their debut album, Shades of Deep Purple, in July of that year. They have undergone many changes of personnel over the years, and today Ian Paice is the only member from the original line-up still with the band. The other members currently are Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Steve Morse and Don Airey.

Deep Purple (Deep Purple album). Deep Purple, also referred to as Deep Purple III, is the third studio album by the English rock band Deep Purple, released in June 1969 on Tetragrammaton Records in the United States and only in September 1969 on Harvest Records in the United Kingdom. Its release was preceded by the single "Emmaretta" and by a long tour in the UK, whose dates were interspersed between the album's recording sessions.

The members of Deep Purple were watching their chance at making a new album go up in flames – literally. The heavy metal pioneers had come to Montreux, Switzerland in December 1971 to record their next LP with the help of the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio. Deep Purple’s plan was to cut new tracks in the theater of the Montreux Casino, which shut down for refurbishment for a few months every winter. Claude Nobs, who founded the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival and also promoted local rock gigs, had arranged everything.

Especially influential to later metal bands were Ian Gillan's powerful screams and Ritchie Blackmore's virtuoso solos.

Led Zeppelin's fourth album, Black Sabbath's Paranoid, and Deep Purple's Machine Head have stood the test of time as the Holy Trinity of English hard rock and heavy metal, serving as the fundamental blueprints followed by virtually every heavy rock & roll band since the early '70s. And, though it is probably the least celebrated of the three, Machine Head contains the "mother of all guitar riffs" - and one of the first learned by every beginning guitarist - in "Smoke on the Water
