Philip Kunia Pahinui (Hawaiian pronunciation: ; April 22, 1921 – October 13, 1980) was a slack-key guitarist and singer of Hawaiian music. Born into a struggling family, Gabby was born Charles Kapono Kahahawai Jr. and later hānaied with his brother and one of his sisters to Philip and Emily Pahinui and raised in the impoverished district of Kaka'ako in Honolulu in the 1920s ("all tin roofs and kinda falling apart")
Bla on Bla. James Daniel Pahinui Bla. 1. Hale‘iwa Honky Tonk. 2. Sanoe (Queen Lili‘uokalani). 3. Silhouettes (Bob Crewe). 4. Kaua‘i Beauty (Henry Wai‘au). 5. Two of Us (Paul McCartney & John Lennon). 6. Just a Closer Walk with Thee (Anonymous). Emily Pahinui played organ at church. When I sing it, I feel her next to me. Dedicated to Jeff Johnson, Jack Johnson’s dad and Hale‘iwa’s man of the waves and protector of the ‘āina. THE CHRISTMAS SONG is my dad’s kind of song. Shoji jumped in with jazz guitar. Shoji jumps back in and riffs again.
It's wonderful to hear Bla Pahinui (or James Bla Pahinui, to offer his full name) return to what's really his signature piece, "Waimanalo Blues," this time around achingly poignant, the voice deeper and richer than ever before, like burled wood.
