The Afrobeat originator died in 1997, but his legacy lives on. Kuti’s complete catalogue of almost 50 albums has been released online and on CD by Knitting Factory Records, and the label has also started releasing vinyl. Until KFR’s vinyl programme has been completed many of Kuti’s best LPs, particularly with his Africa 70 (and Afrika 70) band in the 1970s, are rare treasures. However, in addition to the Barclay/Talkin’ Loud LPs, earlier reissues can sometimes still be found on various African, European, American and Japanese labels. Here are ten of the finest and the rarest original pressing. .Fela & The Africa 70 with Ginger Baker Why Black Man Dey Suffer (Originally released on African Songs, 1971).

The Best Best of Fela Kuti is a compilation album by Nigerian Afrobeat artist Fela Kuti, released in 1999 by MCA Records. It was issued in the United States in 2000 as part of a reissue series of Kuti's albums. The album was reissued as The Best of the Black President in 2009 by Knitting Factory Records and received universal acclaim from music critics.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti (15 October 1938 - 2 August 1997), or simply Fela () was a Nigerian t musician and composer, pioneer of Afrobeat music, human rights activist, and political maverick. Fela Kuti’s influence on black contemporary music cannot be overestimated; virtually all modern forms of black music (from funk to electronic) owe something to his irresistible Afrobeat groove. Filmed in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1982, this 53-minute documentary mixes footage of Fela Anikulapo Kuti performing at his Shrine nightclub, interviews with the controversial musician, glimpses of life at his not-so-palatial Kalakuta Republic compound, and scenes of Lagos street life. Fela recorded over 70 albums during his lifetime, all mythic.

Fela's music draws upon the rhythmic dynamism of West Africa, the testimonial spirit of East Africa, and New World traditions from America (jazz) and the Caribbean. As a synthesis of styles, it's remarkably successful; the term "Afro-beat" is as close as anyone's come to pinning Fela Kuti down. On this studio recording released in 1997, Fela joins his usual large ensemble of musicians to deliver three extended pieces which should be familiar to his more avid listeners. Nigeria was a very fertile place for musical development in the early '70s, when Fela Kuti first began to receive widespread attention. His vision remained sharp and clear through the next two decades until his untimely death in 1997. He reminded the people of Nigeria (and those of the world) of their common humanity, and he openly questioned the roles of government and other institutions.

Fela Kuti was playing with the Koola Lobitos in London’s Flamingo club in the mid 60s when he first met Ginger Baker. The four-track album is, by any sane standard, one of the greatest live documents of all time and features not one but two of the era’s most brilliant drummers (Tony Allen being the other). Live! should have been the start of a beautiful creative partnership. By the early 1980s, Fela Kuti was fully engaged in a spiritual project to make himself completely invulnerable to death by the use of both traditional and newly invented magic rituals. His new belief system included spiritually bulletproof cloaks, UFO contact and chicken sacrifice.
