The Notorious Byrd Brothers is the fifth album by the American rock band the Byrds, and was released in January 1968, on Columbia Records. The album represents the pinnacle of the Byrds' late-60's musical experimentation, with the band blending together elements of psychedelia, folk rock, country, electronic music, baroque pop, and jazz. With producer Gary Usher, they made extensive use of a number of studio effects and production techniques, including phasing, flanging, and spatial panning.

Release Date: 1968 Tracklist. The Byrds - The Notorious Byrd Brothers. I decided to check out these guys based on recommendations from the Elephant 6 label forum. I’m quite glad I did as I would have never looked to the Byrds for psychedelic music of this nature after hearing Mr. Tambourine Man. Upon reading the booklet coming with the Columbia reissue you got a clear idea of the band at the time. The year is 1966 and Tension in the group is at an all time high. Falling apart as a rock band they became a studio art project eventually causing some members to eventually leave

The recording sessions for the Byrds' fifth album, The Notorious Byrd Brothers, were conducted in the midst of internal turmoil that found them reduced to a duo by the time the record was completed. That wasn't evident from listening to the results, which showed the group continuing to expand the parameters of their eclecticism while retaining their hallmark guitar jangle and harmonies. But the Byrds did not bury the essential strengths of their tunes in effects: "Goin' Back" (also written by Goffin & King) was a magnificent and melodic cover with the expected tasteful 12-string guitar runs that should have been a big hit.

The Byrds started recording this 1968 album with four members and ended up with two, but the internal turmoil isn’t reflected in the harmonious songs and adventurous spirit. While there’s a golden glow to the nostalgic reverie of Goin’ Back and country picking of You Ain’t Going Nowhere, the group also push boundaries: Artificial Energy soundtracks a drug trip with blaring horns and phased guitars. And on the anti-conscription song Draft Morning, tinkling instrumentation and gentle vocals run into careening brass and gunfire sound effects

The recording of the 1968 album The Notorious Byrd Brothers was a labour of love; it's more experimental and progressive than their previous works and is considered one of the best albums they made. 180 gram audiophile vinyl. Though some only know The Byrds for their covers, critics believe that they are amongst the most important and influential bands of the 1960s. Their signature sound of clear harmony singing and jangling guitars combined well with the sounds of British Invaders The Beatles & The Rolling Stones, and they became the pioneers of Folk Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Raga Rock, and Country Rock.
