Missa Azzolina: Credo. Orazio Benevolo (or Benevoli as his name is more commonly rendered) is relatively unknown composer of considerable talent. He was born in Italy, spending his entire career there (mostly in Rome) except for three years in Vienna from 1643-1645. He is most well known for his large scale sacred vocal works. Apparently there is a 48-voice mass from his pen. If only some one would record that!

Orazio Benevolo or Benevoli (19 April 1605 – 17 June 1672), was a Franco-Italian composer of large scaled polychoral sacred choral works (. one work featured forty-eight vocal and instrumental lines). He was born in Rome, to a French baker and confectioner, Robert Venouot, which name was Italianized to Benevolo. Benevolo was a choirboy at San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome (1617–23). Later, he assumed posts as maestro di cappella at Santa Maria in Trastevere (from 1624); then, at Santo Spirito in Sassia (from 1630); and, eventually, at his old church, San Luigi dei Francesi (from 1638)  . Benevolo: Missa Si Deus pro nobis; Magnificat. They have scant representation on recordings, though, so Hervé Niquet and Le Concert Spirituel are among the first artists to do justice to Benevolo's music with this 2018 release on Alpha. The featured works are the Missa Si Deus pro nobis ("If God is for us") for 16 voices, and a suitable companion piece, the Magnificat for 16 voices, though Niquet employs 32 singers in 8 choirs and 16 instrumentalists. This disc is highly recommended for anyone interested in Baroque sacred music and especially for fans of Niquet's exciting renditions of rarely performed works.
