A Severn Rhapsody O. 2. Nocturne (New Year Music) O. these renditions haven't been bettered since being recorded in the late 70s. (the drawing of Sir Adrian on the front cover was done. I first heard the music of Gerald Finzi while driving in a rental car in Albany, New York in 1990. A classical station was playing his "Eclogue for Piano and Strings". Why had I never before heard this beautiful piece of music ? I pulled over to the side of the road and called the station (remember those early cell phones that looked like walkie-talkies ?), and got the info.
Try the opening A Severn Rhapsody, with its evocative pastoral opening; or try the Romance for string orchestra, with its lush scoring for divided strings; or try The Fall of the Leaf, with its tenderly nostalgic mood. This is not to say that Finzi doesn't have his own voice: his part writing is much smoother, his harmonies are much clearer, and his tone is much suaver than Vaughan Williams. But it is to say that anyone who loves Vaughan Williams will love Finzi.

Rodney Friend, violin London Philharmonic conducted by Adrian Boult. Peter Katin, piano New Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vernon Handley. From booklet (enclosed) by Diana McVeagh. INTROIT (1952) was the second movement of a concerto for small orchestra and solo violi. dmund Rubbra wrote of it having a ‘serene atmosphere and quiet confidence’. The Chandos Violin Concerto/In Years Defaced/Prelude/ Romance is a great curiosity. The majority of the work is Finizi's songs for piano. Contemporary composers orchestrated them for voice.
