Oh Promise Me is a song with music by Reginald De Koven and lyrics by Clement Scott. The song was written in 1887 and first published in 1889 as an art song. De Koven may have based the melody partly on a song composed by Stanislao Gastaldon, "Musica Proibita". In 1890, De Koven wrote his most successful comic opera, Robin Hood. After opening night, the contralto playing Alan-a-Dale, Jessie Bartlett Davis, demanded a song to better show off her voice, threatening to walk out of the production

In the gloaming, oh, my darling! Think not bitterly of me! Tho' I passed away in silence Left you lonely, set you free; For my heart was crush'd with longing, What had been could never be; It was best to leave you thus, dear, Best for you, and best for me. gloaming is the twilight that occurs at dusk and dawn; I'm reminded of Yeats's line about "The blue and the dim and the dark cloths/Of night and light and the half-light".

In the gloaming, oh my darling When the lights are soft and low And the quiet shadows falling Softly come and softly g. .When the trees are sobbing faintly With a gentle unknown woe Will you think of me and love me As you did once long ago. For my heart was tossed with longing What had been could never be It was best to leave you, thus, dear Best for you and best for me.

There are reasons why folk supergroups are few and far between, chief among them the fact that it’s a genre that doesn’t easily lend itself to the type of hype more commonly associated with boisterous rock ‘n’ rollers.
