Recorded live in Sacramento in 1964, the Beach Boys run through several of their big early hits and a bunch of covers that hadn't made it to record. The screaming, while not at a Beatles Live at the Hollywood Bowl level, is loud enough to present a real problem as far as sonic clarity, especially given that the instruments aren't recorded too well either. Even more crucially, the Beach Boys simply didn't play nearly as well on-stage as on record, at least at this concert; the arrangements are thin and the playing and singing are ragged, though the group is enthusiastic
Live in Sacramento contains 37 tracks recorded on August 1, 1964, when the band played two concerts at the California city’s Civic Memorial Auditorium. The album includes many of The Beach Boys’ own early hits, as well as covers of such tunes as Hushabye, The Wanderer, Monster Mash and Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow. Some of the performances featured on Live in Sacramento also appeared on the 1964 record Beach Boys Concert.
By the end of 1964, the Beach Boys were established as one of America’s top groups. In less than three years, they’d placed no fewer than 17 singles on the Hot 100 and had scored their first No. 1 in July of that year with ‘I Get Around. They were now an international attraction as well, having mounted their first overseas trip with an Australian tour early in ’64, and after their first major US itinerary, November saw them in the UK for their first promotional trip. The one thing missing was a No. 1 US album, and that arrived on 5 December, in the form of their first live record.
