BEETHOVEN Coriolan Overture. BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 3, "Eroica" Arturo Toscanini, conductor NBC Symphony Orchestra. Live broadcast, NBC Studio 8H, 19 February 1949 Announcer: Ben Grauer. Pristine’s Andrew Rose has preserved here, in stunning sonics, the complete NBC Symphony broadcast of February 19, 1949, complete with Ben Grauer’s announcements (which are separately tracked so you may skip them). Almost a year later, in late November and early December of 1949, Toscanini and the NBC Symphony made a studio recording of the Eroica for RCA, which is best heard on a compact disc (RCD1-7197) excellently remastered by Ray Hall. The studio recording was made in Carnegie Hall, which gives it an inherent advantage over the dry acoustics of Studio 8H.

Ludwig van Beethoven: The 9 Symphonies - Arturo Toscanini, NBC Symphony Orchestra. Arturo Toscanini had not yet settled permanently in the United States when these two recordings were made with the New York Philharmonic. Symphony 5 was recorded live in 1933, while Symphony 7 was recorded in Studio 8H in 1936. Both were recorded on film in a single continuous take, as opposed to a series of four-minute takes on acetate, which was the standard at the time. Toscanini's Beethoven Seventh with the New York Philharmonic is deservedly famous and here it shows up in better sound than the original RCA remastering. I'm not so keen on this performance of the Fifth: the first movement sounds strident and almost violent, especially when compared with Weingartner, Mengelberg and Furtwängler.

Bampton made her debut with the New York Chautauqua Opera in 1929 as Siebel in Faust. Her appearance there led to an engagement with the Worcester Festival which, in turn, brought her a contract with the Philadelphia Opera Company where she remained for three years performing mezzo roles. Her successes in opera led to numerous offers, particularly from Stokowski who cast her in a concert performance of Boris Godunov as well as the legendary Gurrelieder performances.

Toscanini also conducted the New York Philharmonic in Carnegie Hall for RCA Victor in several recordings in 1929 and 1936. He made a series of long-unissued recordings with the Philadelphia Orchestra for RCA Victor in Philadelphia's Academy of Music in 1941 and 1942. All of Toscanini's commercially issued RCA Victor and HMV recordings have been digitally remastered and released on compact disc. Charles O'Connell, who produced many of Toscanini's RCA Victor recordings in the 1930s and early 1940s, said that RCA Victor decided to record the NBC Symphony Orchestra in Carnegie Hall, whenever possible, after numerous customer complaints about the flat and dull-sounding early recordings made in Studio 8-H in 1938 and 1939.
